  • Notes 
    • Thomas died in 1924 aged 25 (BDMNZ). He was buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill in the Roman Catholic section, block 1, plot 21A. His headstone states that he was accidentally killed at Wingatui.
    • Steeplechase Fatality. Winton Jockey Killed. (By Telegraph - Press Association). Dunedin,
      Thursday. At the racecourse this afternoon, while the Wingatui Steeplechase was being run, Isla Bank, belonging to Morgan brothers, fell very heavily at a brush fence after going about seven furlongs, and came down on its rider, T. W. O'Connell. The horse had to be lifted off O'Connell, who was immediately picked up by the ambulance. The unfortunate jockey, on being examined by Dr. Fergus, was found to be dead, his skull being fractured. Deceased was a married man with four children. His home was at Winton. He was in the employ of A. Gerrard (Auckland Star, Volume LV, Issue 132, 6 June 1924, Page 6).
