  • Notes
    • Joseph was born in 1838 at Coventry, and baptised 2 days after his birth, at St John the Baptist. He was 3 years old when he arrived in Nelson on the ship 'Clifford' in 1842 with his father Thomas, mother Hannah ( Richardson) and 5 siblings. The voyage from Gravesend to New Zealand had taken 4 1/2 months. After they left the ship Thomas and Hannah cleared a section of bush, pitched their tent and set up home. Hannah was typical of the early settlers and did her part to contribute to the family 's new life style. She would buy supplies in Nelson and walk back to Wakefield with the goods across her back. Thomas set up as a cartage contractor with Mr S Hargood delivering timber some 2 miles on their shoulders. This work continued until Joseph's parents were able to move to their land in the Wai-iti Valley where they established their farm 'The Laurels'. At age 26 Joseph married Sarah Norris in 1865 with 9 children being born in their marriage. He worked as a farmer in Wakefield and in 1866 he became a member of the Nelson Rifle Volunteers. Joseph and Sarah spent many years in the Nelson region before moving to Fielding. In 1933 Joseph died age 94 and is buried at Fielding Cemetery.
