Biography | Following is from Bernie Tunnicliffe (Carterton, NZ) : Thomas & Hannah Tunnicliffe departed from Gravesend, England 18th December 1841 aboard the "Clifford" and after 4 1/2 months arrived in Nelson NZ on 11th May 1842. They cleared a section of bush, pitched their tent and set up home with their five children. Thomas and a Mr S. Hargood set up as cartage contractors, taking a contract with Edward Baigent for the delivery of timber at 5 shillings (50 cents) per 100 feet to the site of J.W. Saxtons Clairmont Cottage job some two miles from where the trees were being milled. (This they carted on their shoulders). Other work was provided by the NZ Company (eg: clearing of tracks and walkways through the bush) Mr Fox of the NZ Company advised the men to cultivate as much land as possible and also supplied them with seed. The men filled the weeks by working their contract and working the land. This dual work continued until Thomas & Hannah were able to move full time to their land in Wai-iti Valley where they established their farm "The Laurels". | |
