The name Roe comes from the ancient Norman Culture that was established in Britain after the conquest of 1066.

It was a name for a person with red hair.

The surname Roe was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D

This is William and Frances Roe's final resting place

William died on 24 Sep 1888 in Waiwetu, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND and was buried on the 26th Sep 1888

Frances died on Nov 1866 in Waiwetu, Wellington, NEW ZEALAND and was buried on the 27th of Nov 1866

History

William along with his wife Frances and three children arrived in New Zealand from Gravesend, London leaving on the 19th June 1841 aboard the Ship Gertrude and arriving in Port Nicholson, Wellington on 30th Oct 1841.

They setup home in Wellington where William and Frances both died and were buried in the St James Anglican Church graveyard in Lower Hutt. Future generations of the family slowly moved North and settled firstly in Hastings and then some moved to Gisborne, Opotiki, Hamilton and Auckland

There are members of the Roe family in a number of locations throughout New Zealand such as New Plymouth and a number overseas in England and Australia
